Taiwanese mobile carrier Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) and Apple are selling iPhone 3G’s without any restrictions of using SIM cards from CHT only, leaving owners the option to switch service providers or use SIM cards from local providers while traveling. Initially, representatives from CHT said that iPhone will only work on their network, but customers are discovering that SIM cards from other providers are also working on the iPhone.
However, if you are planning to import an unlocked iPhone from Taiwan you won’t get it cheap. As an 8GB iPhone 3G without contract is priced NT$26,600 (US $800) and the 16GB models is priced NT$29,900 (US $899). Customer can get a handset for cheap with two year contract but in that case also CHT is requiring a refundable deposit ranging up to NT$24,000 (US $700).
In other iPhone related news, Apple has posted a list of countries and carriers around the world that carry iPhone 3G. The list also provides information about carriers offering the unlocked version of the iPhone in their respective countries. The list is part of a support page for activating an iPhone 3G in various countries.
