Nominees for Best FPS of 2008 are…
Call of Duty: World at War (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
People were highly apprehensive of World at War not only because it took place in the overused World War II era all over again, but because it wasn't being developed by Infinity Ward. Developer Treyarch put all our inhibitions to rest with a mighty fine game that managed to live up to the standards set by its predecessors. They even managed to take things to the next level by introducing a co-operative mode (a first for a game in this series) and an awesome Horde mode where players took on wave after wave undead Nazi soldiers.
Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360, PC)

Left 4 Dead may be pretty skimpy on the content front, offering players only four maps to tinker with, but at the same time it also offers one of the most intense co-operative experiences of the year. In theory the premise sounds pretty simple — move from point A to point B while killing anything and everything that you come across. In practice, doing this gives a whole new meaning to the word intense, as you not only have to fend off hundreds (and is some cases thousands) of fast moving mutated humans but you also have to try and ensure your teammate’s survival against those terrifying odds.
Crysis Warhead (PC)

Even though Crysis Warhead is a stand-alone expansion it definitely deserves a mention in this category, since it performs just as well as any full-fledged game would. Not only does Warhead game look and perform better, but it even plays better than Crysis since Crytek have streamlined the game to cut out all the unnecessary crap that cluttered Crysis up towards the end. Included with the game is a brand new MP component called Crysis Wars, which by the way, is free for the next few days.
And the winner is…
Call of Duty: World at War

Call of Duty: World at war is a fine game and all, but one the biggest reasons the game became this year's shooter of the year is because it offered major bang for your buck. Firstly there’s the entertaining single player campaign that can be replayed all over again with up to four players on co-op. Next, you have the most excellent versus modes that'll keep you busy for ages. And finally you even have the new Horde mode that isn't as brainless as it seems at first so you really can’t go wrong with this game. If you can look past the fact that game takes place in the World War II era once again, we strongly recommend you pick this bad boy up if you haven’t already.
Oh and this game also had
Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland's voice) so you know…
